Few missing as boat capsizes in Rive Shitalakkhya

Gazipur: Some passengers went on missing as a trawler capsized in the River Shitalakkhya at Srihongshi of Kapasia upazila in Gazipur on Sunday night.

Local people said, few people including a woman were missing after the boat sank at about 10:00pm.

Being informed, team of Gazipur Fire service and civil defence members went to the spot and started rescue operation. However, the fire fighters could not rescue anyone yet.

The Kapasia police Officer-in-charge (OC) Abu Bakar Sidiqque quoting local people said an engine-run trawler carrying around 25 readymade garment (RMG) workers on it were traveling to the boat terminal at Srihongshi from the Barmi Bazar area of Sripur upazila on Sunday night, when the trawler collided with a sand-laden boat and upturned into the river.

Most of the passengers of the trawler managed to swim ashore with the help of local people, however some other passengers went on missing.

The OC said the Srihongshi police held the boatman of sand-laden boat and seized the vessel.

The Gazipur fire service deputy assistant director Akhteruzzaman said we were informed that a woman went on missing in the boat capsize. The rescuers could not find anyone in the over-night drive. The rescue operation will be started on Monday morning.
