Dhaka water conference 2017 kicks off on Saturday
Dhaka: A two-day Dhaka Water Conference 2017 will begin from July 29 here with a priority to achieving seven Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through optimum use of water.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate the water conference to be held at a city hotel.
A total of 82 representatives, including ministers and state ministers, from 27 countries would participate in the conference.
This was revealed by LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Engineer Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain at a press conference in the conference room of Local Government Division (LGD) today.
Water Resources Minister Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud, State Minister for Water Resources Nazrul Islam Bir Protik, Senior Secretary of the Water Resources Ministry Zafar Ahmed Khan and Secretary-in-charge of Local Government Division Ekramul Haque, among others, were present at the press conference.
Mosharraf said SDG-6 is directly related to water and separate six targets have been fixed to achieve the SDG-6 target.
On the last day, the conference will adopt the Dhaka declaration, he said.
In reply to a question, Mosharraf said the government has taken various programmes to recover khash pond for preserving ground water and provide safe water.
Different initiatives also have been taken to remove water logging problems in various cities including Dhaka, he added.
This year's theme of the water conference is water in sustainable development. Four technical sessions on safe water, sanitation, water quality and water management will be held during the two-day conference.
Recommendations and advises on eight specific subjects on water will made at the four sessions.
