Policeman to die for killing wife in Gopalganj
Gopalganj: A court here on Monday convicted a policeman of killing his wife in 2005 and sentenced him to death.
The condemned convict is Mashiur Raman, about 36 years old, a police constable and son of Mofizur Rahman alias Papa of Char Manikdah village in Sadar upazila. He was suspended from the service over the murder.
Judge Md Dalil Uddin of Gopalganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal also fined the convict Tk 50,000 and acquitted five other accused as the allegation brought against them could not be proved.
According to the prosecution, Mashiur married Sadia Jahan alias Tuli Begum, daughter of Neshar Uddin Mollah of Shagolchhira village in Muksudpur upazila, on November 22, 2004.
Since the marriage, Mashiur and his family members used to torture her for dowry.
On November 27, 2005, they put pressure on her to bring Tk 1 lakh from her parents. At one stage of altercation over the issue, they killed her.
Later, victim’s father filed a murder case with Sadar Police Station accusing Mashiur, his father Mofizur Rahman, mother Selian alias Shelly, sister Mahfuza Begum and brother-in-law Ibrahim on November 28.
After investigation, sub-inspector Md Humayun Kabir submitted a charge-sheet to the court against six people on April 16, 2007.
