Dhaka: The militants of West Nakhalpara militant den tried to blow up the flat by keeping a grenade on the stove, said RAB officials.
In the early hours of Friday, three alleged militants were killed and two members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) injured after the law enforcers carried out a drive at a suspected militant hideout at West Nakhalpara in Dhaka.
Benazir Ahmed, director general (DG) of RAB, said a youth, Jahid, rented a flat of the house showing National ID card.
Later, three youths, aged between 25 and 30 years, started living there.
‘At one stage of the drive, they tried to blow up the flat keeping one grenade on the stove of their fourth floor flat. When RAB personnel smelt gas leakage, they instantly stopped gas supply to the six-storey building that saved the building from a big accident,’ Benazir added.
Tipped-off that a gang of militants were staying on the fourth floor of a six-storey building at West Nakhalpara, a RAB team cordoned off the building around 2 am, said Mufti Mahmud Khan, Director (Legal and media wing) of RAB.
‘At one stage, the militants opened fire and hurled a grenade around 5:30am targeting the RAB personnel,’ said Mufti adding that the Rab men also fired back in retaliation.
‘Three militants were killed during the exchange of gunshots while two RAB members injured,’ he added.
Meanwhile, a bomb disposal unit of RAB entered the building.
After the drive, two pistols and some explosives substances were recovered from the building, said Mufti Mahmud.
The house owner and its caretaker were questioned before their release from the office of the elite force, he said adding that residents of the building have been evacuated safely.
