Dhaka: Leaders of Bangladesh General Students Rights Protection Council (BGSRPC) on Friday demanded immediate release of Eden College Student Lutfunnahar Luma, also a leader of the quota reform movement.

They raised the demand at a press conference held at Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB) office in the city’s Segunbagicha area.

Luma was arrested from her village home in Sirajganj on August 15 on charges of her alleged involvement in instigating violence during the student protest demanding road safety.

Later, she was shown arrested in a case filed under the ICT Act with Ramna Police Station.

In the written statement, joint convener of the BGSRPC Ataullah said though Luma was actively involved in quota reform movement, she did not take part in the students’ movement for road safety.

She was staying in Gupalgonj and Sirajgonj from July 3 to August 15, reads the statement.

‘A video clip which became viral on social media during student movement in Jigatola on August 4 showed that a girl wearing rose colour dress. As the face of the girl was covered, it was not possible to identify her completely. But, Luna was arrested for her wearing a rose coloured dress during the quota reform movement,’ said Ataullah.

He demanded the immediate release of Luma and other activists of the movement.

Among others, joint convener of BGSRPC Bin Yamin Mollah and Luma’s mother and one of her sisters were present at the press conference.
