Landslide victory for AL candidate in Pirganj municipality
Rangpur: Awami League (AL) candidate Tazimul Islam Shamim won the mayoral post in the maiden elections of Pirganj municipality with a landslide victory on Sunday.
‘Tazimul bagged 7,671 votes with election symbol of ‘Boat’ defeating his nearest rival independent candidate Saydur Rahman who got 1,879 votes with ‘Cocoanut Tree’ symbol,’ according to the unofficial results.
Another Independent candidate Advocate Kazi Lumumba Lumu got 1,171 votes with symbol ‘Jug’ while BNP-nominated candidate Shahidul Islam Sebu bagged 168 votes with symbol ‘Sheaf of Paddy’ for the mayoral post.
The nine general Councillors elected. They are Kabirul Islam (ward no-1), Garur Ali Mandal (ward no-2), Raja Mian (ward no-3), Saiful Azad (ward no-4), Pabitra Kumar Biswas (ward no-5), Ashraful Alam (ward no-6), Alamgir Hossain (ward no-7), Shafikul Islam Safu (ward no-8) and Saheb Ali (ward no-9).
On the other hand, three Female Councillors elected from the reserved wards. They are Anjuara Begum (wards nos-1,2,3), Salma Begum (wards nos-4,5,6) and Sheuly begum (wards nos-7,8,9).
‘The maiden elections of Pirganj municipality were held without any untoward incident amid tight security measures,’ Returning Officer and District Election Officer GM Shahatab Uddin said.
Nine Presiding Officers, 38 Assistant Presiding Officers and 76 Polling Officers conducted the polls at 38 polling booths in nine polling centres of the municipality.
‘A total of 12,937 voters, including 6,317 males and 6,620 females, were eligible to cast their votes in the maiden Pirganj municipality polls on Sunday,’ he said.
Four candidates contested for the mayoral post, 47 candidates for the nine councillors posts in nine wards and 10 female candidates contested for three posts of female councillors from reserved wards in the polls.
Talking to BSS tonight, Pirganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer SM Mazharul Islam and Officer-in-Charge of Pirganj Thana Rezaul Karim said the maiden polls in Pirganj municipality were held peacefully in a free, fair and transparent manner.
It may be mentioned here that the first ever mayor-elect of Pirganj pourasabha Tazimul Islam Shamim is a nephew of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
He is son of late Moulana Abdul Khaleque Miah, elder brother of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s husband late Dr M A Wazed Miah, of village Laldighee Fotehpur in Pirganj upazila.
