Fire service official caught red-handed while taking bribe
Dhaka: Bangladesh Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) on Thursday caught red-handed an official of Fire Service and Civil Defense in Shariatpur while taking bribe.
An six-member ACC team, led by its director Nasim Anwar, arrested deputy assistant director of Fire Service’s Madaripur zila office Majumder Md Mahfuzur Rahman from Palong Bazar of Shariatpur sadar, ACC public relations officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya told UNB.
Hakim Matbar, a furniture trader, submitted a written compliant against Mahfuz with the Commission saying the fire service staff demanded Tk one lakh as bribe for giving a report on fire incident.
In December last year, the furniture shop of Hakim was gutted in a fire and he required a report on the fire incident to collect compensation from an insurance company.
In consultation with the ACC officials, the plaintiff went to Palong Bazar on Thursday to give Mahfuz Tk 25,000 in bribe. While receiving the money, the ACC team caught him red-handed.
Later in the day, ACC assistant director Md Sajjad Hossain of Faridpur zila office filed a case with Palong Police Station in connection with the incident.
The ACC team also arrested office assistant Sajjadul Islam for cooperating Mahfuzur in taking bribe.
Besides, ACC deputy director of Comilla zila office Abul Kalam arrested Maligaon Union Parishad chairman Md Shahjahan from his home for allegedly misappropriating about Tk 55 lakh from a local government project.
