BNP divides Dhaka city unit into two
BNP has divided its Dhaka city unit into south and north ones making Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel and Abdul Quayum their leaders respectively.
Sohel, also the party’s joint secretary general, has been made the president of BNP’s Dhaka south unit while ex-ward commissioner Quayum president of its Dhaka north unit. Sohel was the member secretary of the outgoing undivided Dhaka city unit BNP while Quayum was its joint convener, reports UNB.
Quayum has been staying abroad since he was charged with Italian citizen Cesare Tavella murder in 2015.
Tavella, 50, an aid worker, was killed at Dhaka’s Gulshan Diplomatic Zone on September 28, 2015.
Ex-Dhaka city corporation ward commissioner Kazi Abul Bashar has been made the general secretary of Dhaka south unit BNP while another former-ward commissioner of Kafrul area Ahsanullah Hasan general secretary of Dhaka north unit BNP.
Earlier, a 52-member convening committee of undivided Dhaka city unit BNP was formed on July 18, 2014 making Mirza Abbas its convener dissolving its previous committee-led by Sadeque Hossain Khoka.
Though the Abbas-led committee was supposed to form a full-fledged committee by six months, the new committees of Dhaka north and south units have been formed after two years and eight months.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir approved a 70-member and 64-member partial committees of the party’s new Dhaka south and Dhaka north units respectively on Tuesday night following a directive of party chairperson Khaleda Zia.
The two committees have been asked to form their full-fledged committees by a month.
