Water Minister warns against corruption in dam construction
Sunamganj: Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud on Friday renewed his warning that corruption in the construction of embankments in the haor regions will not be tolerated.
"Those who resorted to corruption in the construction of dams will surely be punished," he said while talking to reporters at the local Circuit House after visiting damaged dams in haor areas of the district.
The minister said three probe panels have already been formed to look into the matter and the bill for the dam construction will be paid only after investigation.
He once again claimed that the haor regions have been submerged due to heavy rains not for damaged dams.
Anisul further claimed that local farmers damaged dams at different points to create paths for ferrying paddy.
He underscored the need for taking sustainable plans to protect crops in the haor areas and increasing navigability of the hilly rivers through capital dredging for a natural solution to flooding.
State Minister for Water Resources Muhammad Nazrul Islam was also present.
Several thousand hectares of croplands of the haor areas of the district were washed away after a number of embankments got damaged amid huge flow of water triggered by torrential rainfall and onrush of water from the upstream.
