Customs raid at Apan Jewellers outlets, seal Gulshan shop
Dhaka: The Custom Intelligence officials conducted raid at five outlets of Apan Jewellers and sealed its Gulshan branch as a part of their search operation, Dirty Money, on Sunday.
Earlier, in the morning, the custom officials conducted the operation at Gulshan, Uttara, Mouchak, and Simanto Square outlets of Apan Jewellers.
The officials conducted the drives at the outlets when the son of Apan Jewellers’ owner Dildar Ahmed is among the five men accused of raping two university students in a hotel in Dhaka, sparked outrage across the country.
Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) has formed a two-member committee to investigate the sources of wealth of Dildar Ahmed, one of the owners of Apan Jewellers and father of the Banani rape-case prime accused Safat Ahmed.
CIID Director General Moinul Islam said they constituted a two-member probe panel consisting of our Deputy Director HM Shariful and Assistant Revenue Officer Zakir Hossain on 11 May to look into the sources of wealth of Dildar Ahmed.
The Gulshan outlet of Apan Jewellers found closed during the raid, so the customs officials sealed the shop at Shubastu Tower, said Moinul Islam.
He said the custom intelligence also sought documents of Apan Jewellers’ dealings.
Dildar Ahmed is in the limelight after the rape of two private university girls by his son Shafat and his cohorts in a Banani hotel came to the fore.
One of the rape victims filed a case with Banani Police Station on 6 May accusing five people, including Safat. The four other accused are Nayeem Ashraf, Sadman Sakif, Shafat’s driver Billal, 26, and his bodyguard Abul Kalam Azad.
Of them, prime accused Safat and Sadman were remanded on 12 May over the rape incident after they were arrested from Sylhet on 11 May night.
Dildar Ahmed, who along with his partners owns six showrooms of Apan Jewellerrs in Uttara, Banani, Gulshan and Mouchak areas of the capital, has already been listed as a ‘non-transparent’ businessman.
The CIID sent a letter to the Bangladesh Bank on 11 May seeking information about the bank accounts of Dildar.
Earlier, Moinul said there is no record of gold import in the last 10 years in the country.
‘We’re looking into the source of gold collection of Apan Jewellers as it’s one of the country’s biggest jewellery brands,’ he said.
