Now Hefazat wants removal of all statues
Dhaka: The Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, a Chittagong-based Islamist group, expressing satisfaction over removal of statue of the lady justice from the Supreme Court premises, on Friday placed their fresh demand for removing all the other statues across the country.
The Dhaka city unit of Hefazat-e-Islam demonstrated in front of the Baitul Mukarram Mosque after Jumma prayers this afternoon and made the fresh demand.
During the demo, Maolana Nur Hossain Quashemi, president of Hefazat city unit, thanked the Prime Minister for the removal of the statue.
“Bangladesh is a country of fundamental Islamists, no culture of statue establishment would be allowed by the people here,” he said.
“So, other statues which are set up on roads or intersections throughout the country, are also rejected by the people and all of them must be removed,” he added.
The Islami leaders also warned that no statue would be allowed at any place of the country in future.
The court authorities removed the statue of the lady justice made by sculptor Mrinal Haque early Friday, triggering massive protest among the progressive parts of the society.
This morning, police foiled an attempt of leftist student organisations to stage demonstrations in front of the High Court Mazar Chattar protesting the statue removal. Several students were injured in the incident.
Meanwhile, Road Transport and Bridges Minister and also Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader said that the decision of statue removal was made by the Supreme Court authorities.
