IOJ thanks PM for removing statue from SC
Dhaka: Appreciating Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for removing the statue of the Greek goddess from the Supreme Court premises, Islami Oikya Jote on Friday said the decision was a time-befitting and nice one.
“We want to thank and congratulate Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for removing the idol by taking a brave step against the communal power. This decision reflects the spirit of the Liberation War, equality, human dignity and justice,” said a press release issued by Mufti Foyzullah, secretary general of Islami Oikya Jote.
Foyzullah said the removal of the idol was a demand not only of Hefazat-e-Islam or Islamic entities but also the Prime Minster and the mass people of Bangladesh.
“It was essential to remove the idol for ensuring peace, discipline and peaceful co-existence in society. The whole nation was united to fulfill the demand. A small group came up not to remove the statue from the Supreme Court premises,” he added.
“We don’t want to say something in reply to the dark thinking, indecent and wrong comments, envious and inciting screams of the isolated and small vested quarter. Instead, we want to ask them it was against the spirit of liberation war…,” the press release said.
Earlier on Friday midnight, the statue of the Greek goddesses was removed from the Supreme Court premises.
On April 9, 2017, a writ was filed with the High Court, seeking removal of the statue from the Supreme Court premises.
Besides, Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh on February 11, this year, demanded removal of the statue of Greek goddess from the SC mentioning that there is no such idol in the apex courts of the US and neighbouring India, and there cannot be any such idol in the Supreme Court of a Muslim majority country like Bangladesh.
