Road crashes claim 46 lives in 6 days
Dhaka: At least 46 people were killed and 68 others injured in road crashes across Bangladesh in the last six days till Tuesday.
Of them, 23 were killed on Saturday (June 23) alone with 17 in a single road accident in Rangpur while five on Tuesday, reports news agency UNB.
In Rangpur, at least 17 people, including five members of a family, were killed and nine others injured in a fatal road accident on Dhaka-Rangpur highway at Kolabari in Pirganj upazila in the small hours of Saturday.
The deceased five family members were identified as Alamgir Hossain and Saddam Hossain, sons of Ayub Ali, hailing from Kaliganj upazila in Lalmonirhat district, their sister Shamsunnahar and her husband Anisuzzaman, and Ayub's nephew Monir Hossain.
All of the victims were readymade garment workers and most of them were residents of Kaliganj and Aditmari upazilas in Lalmonirhat, said police.
Officer-in-charge of Pirganj Police Station Rezaul Karim said a cement-laden truck carrying the garment workers skidded off the road and fell into a roadside ditch after its driver lost control over the steering.
Most of them died as cement sacks fell on them after the truck plunged into the ditch, added the OC.
In Comilla, three people were killed and two others injured as a covered van knocked a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Fuluya area on Comilla-Chandpur road in Laksam upazila.
In Gazipur, three people were killed and 10 others injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a human hauler at Mouchak in the city.
Besides, four people were injured when a truck hit a three-wheeler at Shantola on Jessore-Jhenidah Highway in Jessore on the day.
In Mymensingh, two people were killed in a road crash at Kazirshimla on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Trishal upazila on Tuesday.
In Satkhira, a pickup rammed a cattle trader on Tala-Patkelghata road in Tala upazila around 2:30 pm, killing him.
In Rajshahi, a restaurant owner, Mokul Hossain, was killed and a police officer injured as a bus ran them over in front of Mohanpur Police Station in Mohanpur upazila headquarters.
In Bagerhat, a man was killed and four people were injured as two motorcycles collided on Signboard-Sharankhola road in Morelganj upazila.
In Bandarban, at least four people, including three minors, were killed and 23 others injured as a jeep fell into a ditch after hitting a roadside tree in hilly Mirinza tourist area of Lama upazila on Monday.
In Faridpur, three people were killed and five others injured as the driver of a private car lost control over the wheels and crashed into the railing of a bridge in Ziakuli area of Nagarkanda upazila.
In Naogaon, Samsuddin, 28, son of Afsar Ali of Bil Pakuria village in Sadar upazila, died as a Naogaon-bound bus hit his motorcycle on Sunday while returning home from the district town.
In Rajshahi, a researcher of Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR) was killed and the driver of his car injured in a road accident near Bidyadharpur Kalina Bridge in Mohanpur upazila in the district on June 23.
The deceased was identified as Mansur Rahman, 60, a resident of Chanduma residential area in Rajshahi and injured driver was Sharirat Ali, 32, of Naodapara in the same district.
In Bogra, five people, including two women, were killed and five others injured in separates road accidents in Sadar, Sherpur and Shahjahanpur upazilas.
In Jessore, three people were killed and two others, including Benapole Port deputy director, were injured in separate road accidents on June 22.
In Chittagong, a madrasah teacher was killed in a road accident in Bandar area of the city on the day.
