BNP condemns Farroque’s jailing
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Sunday denounced the jailing of its chairperson’s adviser Zainul Abedin Farroque in ‘political’ cases, saying it is part of the government’s vindictive attitude towards its opponents.
In statement signed by BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, the party said the government has continued repressing BNP leaders and activists at all levels by filing ‘false’ cases against them, jailing them and putting them on remand, reports the UNB.
As part of the government’s intention to ‘cement one-party rule’, the party said Farroque was sent to jail in ‘false and conspiratorial’ cases.
It demanded the government release Farroque immediately withdrawing all the ‘baseless’ cases filed against him.
Earlier in the day, a Dhaka court sent Farroque to jail as he surrendered before it in connection with four arson attack cases filed against him and others BNP men in 2015.
