Edu minister explains why results worse than last year
Dhaka: The results of this year’s Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and its equivalent examinations published on Sunday morning.
A total of 68.91 per cent students have passed HSC and equivalent examinations this year, which is 5.79 points lower than that of last year.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid formally handed over a copy of the results to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at about 10:00am in presence of chairmen of all the boards. After handing over the result, the minister explained the reasons behind this year’s result fall.
Nurul Islam Nahid said last year a total of 74.70 per cent students passed in HSC exam. However, this year the rate is 68.91 per cent, which is 5.97 per cent lower than that of last year’s.
He said, ‘We are not surprised to see the result. This year the examination scripts were scrutinized strictly. The scripts of SSC examinations were also viewed in the same manner. In SSC, the pass rate was 8 per cent lower than that of 2016. In contrast to that HSC result is better than SSC result, which is an achievement.’
‘We formed a committee which specially evaluated the exam scripts this year. The committee got no chances to assess the exam papers randomly. At first, we trained the head examiner, later he taught other examiners,’ said the education minister.
Everyone gave their consent for this procedure of exam script evaluation. Media also helped us in this respect, added the minister.
This year, the girl students achieved better result than the boys. Pass rate of female students is 2.82 per cent more than that of the male students.
As many as 33,242 students secured the highest Grade Point Average (GPA-5) this year where as it was 58,276 in 2016.
