Dhaka: Google has posted a special Doodle for the 88th birthday of structural engineer and architect Fazlur Rahman Khan. Considered the ‘father of tubular designs’ for high-rises, Khan was a pioneer in computer-aided design.

Originally from Bangladesh, Khan moved to the US to study at graduate school and stayed in the country to work in the Chicago design office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. According to his daughter, Yasmin Sabina Khan, he recognized that traditional design and construction methods for tall buildings were uneconomical. In 1971, while designing the world’s tallest building of the time, Khan used the ‘bundled tube’ system. The Sears Tower, which has been renamed the Willis Tower, remained the world tallest building for 25 years.

The Doodle was posted on Google homepage just minute after midnight on 3 April. The Doodle logo represents an artistic picture of Fazlur Rahman Khan along with some structural inventions that represent his majestic work. Doodles are the fun, surprising, and sometimes spontaneous changes that are made to the Google logo to celebrate holidays, anniversaries and the lives of famous artists, pioneers, and scientists.

Khan died in 1982 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia at the age of 52.

The Google Doodle celebrating Khan’s life and accomplishments was created by Lydia Nichols.
