Paige Spiranac has revealed she received death threats while competing at the 2015 Dubai Masters - because of her choice of clothes.

The 24-year-old golfing sensation is not ranked in the top 1,000 female golfers but has accrued 1.2million followers on Instagram.

Despite her rank, Spiranac, who is from Wheat Ridge, Colorado, was invited to participate in the Ladies European Tour event two years ago, sparking outrage amongst the sport's fans, reports the Mirror.

Some suggested that Spiranac was only invited because of her large social media presence, while others believed it was down to her choice of golfing attire.

The complaints were well publicised at the time, but Spiranac has recently revealed the comments she personally received were far worse.

‘I had a really rough go of it both times I was here,’ she told The Guardian . ‘There was a lot of media, it was really stressful and I found the experience really hard. I said I wasn’t coming back to play.’

‘People seem to think I got where I am because of the clothes that I wear. That’s unfair to me and unfair to all of my accomplishments. ‘I was harassed, my family was harassed.

I was receiving death threats, people were invading my privacy, I was being blackmailed. This was going on whilst I was trying to play.’ Spiranac returned to Dubai last month for the Omega Desert Classic.

Not only was she the first female starter but she also hosted coverage of the tournament on Instagram alongside Rory McIlroy and One Direction's Niall Horan.

The golfer added that she doesn't conform to the sport's usual attire and that she's aiming to change the face of the game.
