OIC holds special summit on Jerusalem Wednesday
Dhaka: The Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) will hold an extraordinary summit in Istanbul, Turkey on Wednesday to discuss the repercussions of the recognition by the United States of Al-Quds as a capital of Israel.
President Abdul Hamid, who left here for Istanbul on Monday on a three-day visit, will attend the special conference of the OIC.
The Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Member States will hold an extraordinary meeting on the same morning to discuss the move in a unified and coordinated manner in the face of these developments affecting the occupied city of Al-Quds and its historical, legal and political status, reports the UNB.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam will represent Bangladesh in the meeting, said a foreign ministry official.
Earlier, Donald Trump formally recognised Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, breaking with decades of US policy and defying overwhelming global opposition.
Turkish President Erdogan invited the leaders of OIC member states to convene an extraordinary leaders’ summit in Istanbul on Wednesday over the Jerusalem issue.
Erdogan called upon the OIC members to come together to display joint actions and coordination among Muslim countries.
US President Donald Trump’s Jerusalem move triggered huge criticisms from the Turkish government and politicians.
Bangladesh has already expressed deep concern at the recent announcement by the United States recognising Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and stressed preserving the legal status of Jerusalem within the framework of relevant UN resolutions.
Dhaka also urged all the parties concerned to take a pragmatic approach to the Middle East Peace Process in reaching a two-state solution for peace and stability in the region.
