Bogra: A Juba League man was killed and 25 people were injured in a clash between activists of Jatiya Party and Awami League in Santahar municipality under Adamdighi upazila on Friday afternoon.

The deceased is Shafiqul Islam, the younger brother of Awami League mayoral candidate in the recently held municipality election Rashedul Islam Raja who lost the polls.

After the municipal polls held on 30 December, the local Awami League men alleged that JaPa supporters did not cast their votes in favour of Raja, reports UNB.

Besides, Shafiqul Islam had been at loggerheads with Ferdous Hasan Sumon, general secretary of upazila JaPa and secretary of upazila battery-run auto-rickshaw owners’ association, over the plying of motorized and non-motorised vehicles.

The supporters of both parties locked into an altercation in the CSB Gate area at about 1:00pm today over the issues.

At one stage, they attacked each other with sharp weapons that left Shafiqul dead on the spot and 25 people injured.

The ruling party men also torched five houses of JaPa men in the area.

On information, police rushed in and fired 30 gunshots in the air and teargas shell to bring the situation under control, said Adamdighi police officer-in-charge Shawkat Kabir.

Police recovered the body and sent it to Naogaon General Hospital for an autopsy.

Additional policemen were deployed in the area to fend off further trouble.

Meanwhile, at least five people were injured as the supporters of a newly elected councillor and a defeated councillor candidate clashed in Singair municipality of Manikganj on Friday.
