Banking commission by end of govt tenure: Muhith

Dhaka: Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Sunday said a banking commission will be constituted before the end of the tenure of the present government to look into different problems in the banking sector.

"A banking commission will be constituted in the last year of the tenure of the present government, which will be implemented by the new government," he said while speaking at the annual conference of the stated-owned Sonali Bank at the Institute of Diploma Engineers in Dhaka.

The finance minister said he has long been opposing the idea of forming a banking commission because the banking sector still does not have the capacity to implement it.

"But now I feel that it is needed for the betterment of our financial sector," he added.

Muhith said country's banking sector has witnessed significant development but it has some weaknesses also.

"Many people suggest formation of a banking commission but I do not take such suggestion into consideration because I think, there is no crisis yet in our plan of expectation - journey towards development," he added.

He said a banking commission is needed to look after implementation of laws, policies and regulations in banking sector.

The present government will form such a commission in the last part of its tenure so that the next government can implement it. At that time the banking sector would be in a position when a banking commission would be able to find out a right way for giving it a firm footing, he added.

The finance minister said Sonali Bank was the biggest bank in the public sector a few years back but it is not in such a position right now.

"I am optimistic that Sonali Bank would regain its previous position as soon as possible," he said.

State minister for finance and planning M A Mannan, Bangladesh Bank governor Fazle Kabir, banking and financial institution division secretary Yunusur Rahman and managing director of Solani Bank Obayed Ullah Al Masud spoke at the programme chaired by Sonali Bank chairman Ashraful Makbul.
