Dhaka: A Joint Economic Commission (JEC) will be formed between Bangladesh and the European Union (EU) with a view to increasing mutual financial assistance.

An EU delegation headed by its Ambassador Pierre Mayaudon informed Speaker of the House Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury of the matter after paying a courtesy call at the latter's parliament (JS) office.

Pierre hoped that the JEC will help Bangladesh to boost its economy by many folds.

Describing the EU as one of the development partners, Dr Shirin said, "The commission will start its functioning soon and play a special role for the development of Bangladesh."

They exchanged views of mutual interests during the meeting.

Hailing the EU for its significant role to the overall development at different sectors such as social, economic, and commerce, the Speaker also hoped that such assistances will continue in the days to come.

She also praised the EU for undertaking a program titled Multi Indicative Program (MAIP) to assist Bangladesh saying, "Bangladesh will make a grand success in women development, solving malnutrition related problems, decreasing the mortality rate of child and mother and increasing food security with implementation of the EU program."

The speaker informed Pierre that the JS is now running in accordance with the parliamentary rules and procedures to uphold the democratic system.

The EU will donate Bangladesh a huge amount of money as grant, which is the second largest grant under the program, for overall development of the country, Pierre said.

Pierre greeted the Speaker as he elected chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA).
