Bangladesh clinch Asian Men’s Volleyball title
Dhaka: Bangladesh clinched the title of the Bangabandhu Asian Senior Men’s Central Zone Volleyball Championship outplaying tough opponent Kyrgyzstan by straight 3‐0 ﴾25‐22; 25‐23; 7‐6﴿ sets in the final at Saheed Suhrawardy Indoor Stadium on Tuesday.
This is the first time Bangladesh tasted a title victory in any international competitive event of volleyball in 45 years.
Bangladesh player Horjit Biswas was adjudged player of the tournament while captain Saeed Al Jaber player of the final in the five‐nation tournament.
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed distributed the prizes among the winners as the chief guest in the closing function. State Minister for Youth and Sports Biren Sikder was also present in the occasion.
Bangladesh started their campaign with 3‐1 sets victory against Afghanistan and maintained winning streak outplaying Nepal by 3‐0 sets, but conceded a 2‐3 sets defeat against Kyrgyzstan.
Bangladesh utilised their last chance for final berth beating Maldives by 3‐0 sets in the 4th league match.
Kyrgyzstan reached in the final with all‐win record beating Afghanistan by 3‐1 sets, Maldives by 3‐0 sets and Nepal by 3‐1 sets in the league phase.
Previous edition champion Turkmenistan did not take part in this edition.
Meanwhile, in the day’s 3rd place deciding match at the same venue, Maldives beat Nepal by 3‐1 ﴾25‐22; 25‐14; 25‐19﴿ sets.
