Dhaka: Bangladesh made their 100th Test memorable in a stylish fashion handing hosts Sri Lanka over a four-wicket defeat in the 2nd match of the two-match Joy Bangla Cup Test Series at P Sara Oval in Colombo on Sunday, becoming the 4th country to earn the feat.

Earlier, Australia, the West Indies and Pakistan won their respective 100th Tests.

This is Bangladesh’s 9th victory in the five-day elite cricket and maiden against Sri Lanka after beating Zimbabwe on five occasions in 14 encounters, the West Indies twice in 12 matches and England on one occasion playing 10 Tests.  

The Tigers earned four victories in away matches -- two against the West Indies and one each over Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka -- and won the remaining five matches at home.

Bangladesh have so far played 18 Tests against Sri Lanka since 2001 where they settled for draw on two occasions and lost the remaining 15 matches except the memorable victory in their 100th Test.

Bangladesh, which played their inaugural Test against India at home in 2000, tasted the first victory after five years in January 2005 beating Zimbabwe by 226 runs at MA Aziz Stadium in Chittagong.

The Tigers achieved their historic victory in an away Test beating the West Indies by 95 runs at Kingstown on July 9-23 in 2009 and won the first Test series beating the Caribbean by four wickets at St George in the 2nd and final Test of the two-match series on July 17-20.  

They also whitewashed Zimbabwe in home Test series in 2014 beating them by three wickets in the first Test in Dhaka, by 162-run in the 2nd Test in Khulna and completed clean sweep beating them by 186 runs in the 3rd Test in Chittagong.

Bangladesh earned another long awaited victory in Test upsetting cricket elite England by 108 runs to level the two-match Test series 1-1 at Mirpur Stadium in October 2016.  

Chasing a target 191 runs in the 2nd Test on Sunday, Bangladesh opened the 2nd innings in the day’s first session and reached the target scoring the match-winner 191 for the loss of six wickets in 57.5 overs, featuring polished 82 runs by opener Tamim Iqbal and 41 runs by Sabbir Rahman.

Replying to Sri Lanka’s first innings total of 338, the Tigers made a good foundation hammering 467 runs in the first innings featuring 116 runs by Shakib Al Hasan and achieved their much-awaited victory making 191 runs in the 2nd innings after the hosts posted 319 runs in the 2nd innings.  

World famed all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was adjudged the man of the series contributing 162 runs apart from capturing nine wickets while Bangladesh’s highest scorer (3677) in Test cricket Tamim Iqbal was adjudged the man of the match for his 49 and 82 runs in two innings of the 2nd Test.
