Russell, Gayle fail as Bangladesh defeat UWI Vice Chancellor’s XI
Half centuries from Litton Das and Mushfiqur Rahman steered Bangladesh to a four-wicket win over a UWI Vice Chancellor’s XI at Sabina Park on Thursday night.
Chasing a relatively modest target of 227 for 9 set by the Vice Chancellor’s XI, Bangladesh lost an early wicket that of Mohammed Bijoy, lbw to bowling of Andre Russell for nought, reports sportsmax.tv.
However, Das and Nazmul Shanto enjoyed a 90-run partnership carting the bowling to all parts before Das was forced to retire hurt after getting hit on the hand by Rovman Powell.
Moshfiqur Rahim joined Shanto at the crease but the partnership did not last long as Powell had Shanto caught by Kavem Hodge for 43 with the score on 101 for 2
Riyad was then stumped by Jangoo off the bowling of Yannik Ottley for 10 and Bangladesh were in a spot of bother at 122 for 3.
Shabeir Rahaman was caught by Hodge again off the bowling of Powell for 4 at 127 for 4.
At 156 for 4 Mossadek Saikat was bowled by Searles for 11 as the Vice Chancellor’s XI tried to make a game of it. However, Das resumed on 43 and together with Rahim took the score to 213 when Das was caught by Chadwick Walton for 70, to give Hodge his first wicket of the match in his sixth over.
At the end, Rahim smashed consecutive fours off Javon Searles to remain unbeaten on 75 as the visitors raced to 230 for 6 from 43.3 overs.
Earlier, Kavem Hodge and Yannik Ottley featured in a seventh-wicket stand of 91 that rescued the Vice Chancellor’s XI from a precarious 89 for 6 with Gayle getting 29 as the top order folded to the bowling of Saikat 4 for 14.
Hodge was eventually dismissed for 44 while Ottley was the penultimate wicket to fall in the 49th over.
Searles’ lusty hitting got the home team 14 runs from the final over to propel them to 227 for 9 off their 50 overs that proved to be more than a few runs shy of what could have been a competitive total.
