Mominul’s fifty leads Bangladesh’s charge

Mominul Haque got his fifty.

Chattagram: Bangladesh should feel a bit comfortable at 130 for 2 on the first morning against West Indies, but Imrul Kayes’ dismissal at the stroke of lunch dampened their mood.

Imrul, who survived two chances on 3 and 16, tapped Jomel Warrican straight to short-leg where Sunil Ambris held on to a good catch.

But alongside Mominul Haque, who is unbeaten on 67, Imrul had added 104 for the second wicket.

The morning began with Kemar Roach’s beautiful delivery that angled in from around the wicket and moved away slightly, accounting for Soumya Sarkar in the first over of the Test.

But Mominul quickly got on the top of things with two boundaries against Shannon Gabriel, flicked off his pads and cut past point. In the fast bowler’s next over, Mominul rode the bounce and guided him to the fine-leg boundary.

Imrul, at the other end, was living dangerously. He survived two chances, the first of which was at second slip in the fifth over. Roach induced an outside edge, but Roston Chase grassed the chance. Just after the first hour-mark, he swept Warrican to be caught at deep square-leg, but the on-field umpire wanted to check the bowler’s front foot. Warrican had, unfortunately, overstepped.

While Imrul got himself into several tangles, Mominul continued his smooth sailing in the second hour. He pulled over midwicket, drove over mid-on and cut through point off Chase in the 16th over. He reached his fifty off 69 balls, and looked at ease against pace and spin alike.
