Dhaka: The West Indies found themselves along a cliff edge replying to Bangladesh’s mammoth total of 508 in the first innings of the second Test here at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla Stadium on Saturday.

The Caribbeans posted 75 at the end of the play of the second day losing five wickets. They trail by 433 runs in the first innings.

The tourists lost their five wickets in 29 runs, all bowled by the spinners. This is only the third time in Test history, and the West Indies’ first, when the top five batsmen were bowled out. The last time it happened was 128 years ago when at Kennigton Oval Australia’s top five batsmen lost their wickets cartwheeled. And as if this was not enough for West Indies as their 29/5 is the lowest score for any team down five wickets.

Shakib Al Hasan took the first wicket when he trapped the touring team captain Kraigg Brathwaite by a delivery that has turned inwards. Brathwaite missed it completely and his stumps were shattered.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz, the right-arm off-spinner scalped the second wicket before Shakib hunted his second. Right after that, Miraz sent Roston Chase and Shai Hope to dressing room.

Brief score at the end of the second day:

Bangladesh 508/10 (154 Overs), Mahmudullah 136, Shakib 80, Shadman 76; Kraigg Brathwaite 2/57, Kemar Roach 2/61.

West Indies 75/5 (24 Overs), Shimron Hetmyr 32*, Shane Dowrich 17*; Mehidy 3/36, Shakib 2/15.
