Women's marathon held seeking safe Dhaka

Dhaka: Girls and women from different walks of life came together at the 2nd Dhaka Women’s Marathon on Friday showing their strength reflecting better future.

Dhaka University Vice-chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique inaugurated the 10-km marathon that started from Begunbari point adjacent to the FDC at Hatirjheel marking the International Women’s Day.

Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu handed over prizes among the winners after the marathon held with the theme ‘Safer Dhaka for Women’.

“The marathon will immensely contribute to building self-confidence among the women,” said the minister.

A total 110 marathoners running for 90 minutes completed the marathon within the given time.

Bangladesh Navy athlete Meruna Akhter won the first prize as she finished the race in 52:18 minutes.

Besides, top five winners received cash along with medals and certificates.

The women’s marathon was organised jointly by Everest Academy and Imago Sports Management Ltd.

Around 500 women, including celebrities like, film/TV actors/actress, athletes, cricketers, footballers, foreigners, ambassadors of different embassies at Dhaka, professionals, housewives, and students from universities, colleges and schools, participated in the marathon, said a press release.
