Dhaka: The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has planned conducting a special drive initially in the posh areas of the capital city to identify potential taxpayers and bring in them under the tax-net.

‘The NBR will carry out a door to door survey in the posh areas of capital city so it could bring in the potential taxpayers under the tax-net,’ NBR Chairman Nojibur Rahman told BSS on Sunday.

During the survey, NBR teams with cooperation from local government, public work department and inland resource division would make a list of the residential houses, shops and other commercial and business establishments in the richer parts of the Dhaka metropolis, said the NBR chief.

He said the revenue authorities have targeted brining in 3 lakh 20 thousand new taxpayers under the tax-net to expedite revenue earnings.

He said the government planned increasing the taxpayers’ number to 30 lakh in next three to four-year time, and the NBR has been working in line with the target.

Currently, only 18 lakh people submit income tax return when the NBR targets collecting 1 lakh 76 thousand crore in revenue in the current 2015-16 financial year.

Rahman said besides conducting regular and the special surveys, the NBR had also initiated dialogues with different chambers and trade-bodies to get necessary cooperation from them in mobilising more revenue.

An NBR official told BSS that tax authorities had also directed its 300 circle offices to form teams and conduct survey at least three times a week. The teams will prepare lists of new taxpayers and send those to the respective circle in every month.
