Jatiya Party picks singer Shafin for DNCC mayoral by-polls
Dhaka: Main opposition Jatiya Party on Wednesday picked singer Shafin Ahmed to contest the by-election to the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayoral post with its ticket.
Jatiya Party nominated Shafin Ahmed to vie for the DNCC mayoral post in the by-polls, said a party press release, reports the UNB.
Jatiya Party secretary general Moshiur Rahman Ranga signed the party nomination paper of the singer nominating him as the party candidate.
The party also sent the final nomination paper and a letter to the Election Commission requesting it to give Shafin Jatiya Party election symbol ‘Plough’, said the press release.
On Tuesday, Jatiya Party announced the list of Jatiya Party-nominated councillor candidates for DNCC by-polls at party chairman’s Banani office.
The by-elections to the vacant DNCC mayoral post and Kishoreganj-1 constituency will be held on February 28.
Besides, the by-polls to councillor posts of 36 new wards--18 in DNCC and 18 in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC)--will be held on the same day.
According to DNCC election schedule, the last date for the submission of nomination is January 30 while the scrutiny will be held on February 2 and the last date for the withdrawal of nomination is February 9.
BNP and its alliance partners decided to boycott the by-polls.
