Dhaka: Not everyone likes smell of artificial air fresheners. You can now have your homemade one by making your own scented candle out of an orange peel.

The benefits are double here. You can do away with your dull holiday candles, and it will also eat out bad odors and air toxins indoors, reported the abs-cbnnews.

One might think the process might be complex and expensive. No, you are wrong. Following a few easy steps, and inexpensive craft will ‘provide you with a natural citrus scent at home, add ambiance to your next get-together, brighten your home and use up any unwanted oranges’.

You will need an orange, oil (any cooking oil), knife, and matches. Let’s begin:

First of all, prepare your oranges.

Then, ‘carefully and lightly cut around the orange. Slice into the peel of the orange using the paring knife. Insert only as far as the pith, taking the knife around the middle of the orange, going all the way around the circumference.

Peel the orange. Gently push your finger under the skin of the orange and peel the skin away so that it separates from the orange without tearing.’

‘Locate the ‘wick’. While removing the orange flesh, a white wick-like ‘stem’ part should remain––leave this intact, still attached to the peel.

‘Pour olive oil (approximately three tablespoons) to cover the stem and allow wick to soak for a 2-3 minutes.’

You can create a design to make your candle look better. The design is needed to make it both pretty and functional, as it allows the candle to breathe. For your convenience and to prevent mistakes when cutting the orange, create a design on paper first. ‘Then, take the top off the orange and score out the design you have made, using the knife.’

‘Light the orange’s stem with a lighter. This may take a couple of attempts. It might be easier to use extra-long barbecue matches if you feel it is too cramped using a lighter.’

Now, place the top half where you have scored out the design onto the bottom half with the wick.

Your candle is now ready to use.
