Dhaka: From sugar confectionary to mosquito coil, tissue paper to bricks, and chocolate to car tyres, prices of many commodities are likely to be affected with Finance Minister AMA Muhith’s presentation of the 44th national budget for the fiscal year 2015-16.

The financed minister placed Tk 2,95,100 crore budget for the 2015-16 fiscal year in Parliament on Thursday, with a deficit of Tk 86,657 crore.

Imposition, reduction and increase in Supplementary Duty (SD) will largely affect agricultural and industrial productions in the country ultimately affecting commodity prices.

While prices of different kinds of men, women and baby wears, jam, plastic kitchen ware, tissue paper, chocolate, biscuits, spectacles are likely to be reduced; increase in the prices of black tea, processed fish, tomato, motorbike, steel kitchenware, construction materials like bricks, blocks, glass, tiles, tyres are also expected.

A list is given below showing the decrease and increase in the supplementary duty (SD) on different commodities:

Decrease in price:

1. Sugar confectionary [SD from existing 30% to 20%]
2. Chocolate [SD from existing 30% to 20%]
3. Sweet biscuit, toast, wafers [SD from existing 60% to 45%]
4. Jam, jelly, marmalades [SD from existing 30% to 20%]
5. Mosquito coil, aerosol [SD from existing 30% to 20%]
6. Plastic table/kitchenware [SD from existing 60% to 45%]
7. Doors, windows, frames  [SD from existing 60% to 45%]
8. Ornamental articles [SD from existing 45% to 30%]
9. Plywood, particle board, fibreboard [SD from existing 15% to 10%]
10.  Tissue paper, towels, bed-sheets [SD from existing 45% to 30%]
11.  Printed materials including books, brochures, leaflets, pictures, [SD from existing 15% to 10%]
12.  Men’s wear: overcoat, shirt, jackets, shorts, undergarments, T-shirt, warm clothes [SD from existing 60% to 45%]
13.  Women’s wear: overcoats, skirts, dresses, blouses, slips, undergarments, cardigans, others female hygiene products. [SD from existing 60% to 45%]
14.  Baby products: garments, clothing, tampons, napkin liners [SD from existing 60% to 45%]
15.  Toothbrush [SD from existing 30% to 20%]
16.  Artificial flowers and fruits [SD from existing 60% to 45%]
17.  Spectacles frames, googles [SD from existing 15% to 10%]
