With the US presidential elections just two days away, not a soul interested in international politics or trade seems untouched by all the speculation surrounding one of the most controversial elections of the country to date. While many claim that this election is more about choosing the lesser of two evils, others have said it represents the sexist battle of the ages, reports the Indian Express.

Well, in India we’re as invested in knowing who will win the elections as well, what with US being not only an important trade partner, but also given PM Narendra Modi’s much covered ‘friendship’ with outgoing US President Barack Obama, people are very interested to see the tone of the Indo-US relationship that is to follow now. And not only India, neighbouring country Sri Lanka seems to have one hand on the American pulse too.

According to reports, a group of Sri Lankan Tamils in Jaffna will break over 1,000 coconuts and light as many candles to bless Hillary Clinton, saying the Democratic presidential candidate’s win would be important for the future of the minority community.

‘We will dash 1,008 coconuts on November 8 to bless her ahead of the US election. We expect her to win the election,’ MK Shivajilingam, a Tamil National Alliance (TNA) member of the Tamil controlled northern provincial council said. The event will take place in Jaffna’s historic Kandsamy Kovil in Nallur. There will also be lighting of 1,008 candles at the Jaffna Cathedral, he said.

Tamils in Sri Lanka believe they can find political solution only with the intervention of the US and Clinton’s win would be important for the future of the minority community in Sri Lanka, Shivajilingam said. The Obama administration has extended its support to the reconciliation efforts promised by President Maithripala Sirisena to Tamils.

In India, the Hindu Sena had previously held a similar prayer but for Clinton’s opponent, Republican candidate Donald Trump back in May. The group said that they supported Trump ‘because he is hope for humanity against Islamic terror’.
