‘Baishakh in the Land of Tiger’
A solo patachitra exhibition titled ‘Baishakh in the Land of Tiger (Bagh-er Deshe Baishakh)’ by patua Nazir Hossain began at Galerie Zoom at Alliance Française de Dhaka (AFD) on 24 April 2018.
Mostafizur Rahman Fizar, Minister of Primary and Mass Education, People’s Republic of Bangladesh graced the occasion as the chief guest, said an AFD press release.
Nazir Hossain’s artworks accentuate many different forms of the Royal Bengal Tiger in patachitras that encapsulate many different folk elements of Bangla mythology. Hossain’s choice of colours brings in a good combination of bright hues like jade, ruby, topaz and beryl with contrasting black and white. The mingling and mixing of lines and colours are neat and subtle, and they speak of labour and endless hope. The subjects of the fishermen, farmers, their near and dear ones are combined with tigers and cobras that are taken from the traditional patachitra style. Sometimes muted and at others loud and buoyant, the lines and colours take one away to the idyll of the riverine Bangladesh. The fresh breeze, the birds and the bees, the cows, goats and endless ‘barret clouds’ speak of repose and tranquility.
Nazir Hossain’s thirty-third solo starts in Baishakh (11 Baishakh, to be exact), the first month in the Bangla calendar.
The exhibition will be open to all till 7 May at Galerie Zoom, Alliance Française de Dhaka.
Visiting Hours: Monday to Thursday from 3:00pm to 9:00pm, Friday and Saturday (9:00 am to12:00 noon and 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm), closed on Sunday.
