Lionel Messi, the Argentina football legend, currently in national duty at the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia, might end up in fresh trouble following some new Panama Papers leak.

The recent reports from the Panama Papers leak reveal the Barcelona icon and his father, Jorge Horacio Messi, who was already under probe for tax fraud in Spain are found to be connected to an offshore Panama based organisation, reports the Times Now News.com.

The Messis used offshore companies in Belize and Uruguay to avoid paying millions of dollars in taxes when the Panama Papers revealed they owned yet another offshore company - Mega Star Enterprises in Panama. Owing to their tax fraud, Leo was fined 2.2 million dollars and was given a 21-month suspension.

In 2016, Messi and his father said to International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) that Mega Star Enterprises is totally dormant. However, the fresh internal email leaks from the Mossack Fonseca records reveal otherwise.

Messi’s lawyer has been quoted by Spanish newspaper El Confidencial, an ICIJ partner that the Mega Star Enterprises issue is bygone now and that it was part of the former corporate scheme that had already been arbitrated. Messi’s lawyer claimed that the company is not actively used.

Messi currently playing for Argentina at the quadrennial football extravaganza in Russia this year has had a poor onset to the tournament.

The Barcelona great’s opening match against Iceland will go down in history, credits to his penalty being saved by the Iceland goalie Hannes Þór Halldórsson. Sergio Aguero’s 19th-minute strike was nullified by Alfreð Finnbogason’s opportunistic equaliser in the 23rd minute. Argentina will face Croatia on Thursday, June 21.
