No way to defer election date further: CEC
Dhaka: Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda on Tuesday said there is no way to defer the date of the 11th parliamentary elections further.
He came up with the remark while inaugurating the training session of returning officers at the Election Commission office here in the morning, reports the UNB.
‘There’s no scope to delay it further. So, it won’t be possible to defer the date as we’ve already completed all the preparations for holding the election on December 30,’ said the CEC.
‘We’ve fixed the date considering many things,’ he said adding, ‘Besides, the new parliament must be formed by January 29.’
Nurul Huda also said the election will be free, fair and credible.
He urged the returning officers to perform their duties neutrally without any fear. ‘This time, the election will be held in a different political situation under a new law. The nation is looking forward to the returning officers.’
Issuing a note of warning, the CEC said, ‘Legal action will be taken if the returning officers give in to any pressure from political or influential persons.’
Election Commissioner Rafiqul Islam asked the returning officers to work as per the rules of the Commission.
Divisional Commissioners of Dhaka and Chattogram and deputy commissioners of all 64 districts have been appointed returning officers to conduct the election.
