Rio de Janeiro: Next month's World Cup qualifier between Argentina and Brazil will be played at River Plate's Monumental stadium, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

Earlier in the week, Argentina's football association (AFA) revealed it was considering shifting the game to another venue after the national team's poor start to their qualifying campaign, reported Xinhua.

The Albiceleste lost their opening match at the Monumental to Ecuador 2-0 before a 0-0 draw with Paraguay in Asuncion on Wednesday.

Local media said the AFA had hoped to move the November 13 clash to Cordoba, Rosario or Mendoza, where visiting teams have traditionally found it more difficult to win.

Like Argentina, Brazil began their road to Russia 2018 with a defeat - losing 2-0 to Chile - before an unconvincing 3-1 victory over Venezuela in Fortaleza on Tuesday.

Brazil are currently fifth in the 10-team South American zone standings while Argentina are seventh. Uruguay, Ecuador and Chile top the table with six points each from their first two matches.

The Selecao will meet Peru in Salvador four days after their duel with Argentina while the Albiceleste confront Colombia in Barranquilla on the same day.
