Chittagong Abahani clinch title beating East Bengal

Chittagong: Chittagong Abahani Ltd clinched the title of the maiden eight-team Sheikh Kamal International Club Cup Football Tournament outplaying Kingfisher East Bengal Football Club of Kolkata by 3-1 goals at the port city's jam-packed MA Aziz Stadium on Friday.

Alongside sealing the trophy entertaining around 40,000 audience at floodlight, Ctg Abahani took the sweet revenge of the only loss in the first group stage match to the Kingfisher East Bengal FC by 1-2 goals.

Meanwhile, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina congratulated Ctg Abahani for winning the title of the prestigious football tournament.

The Prime Minister also witnessed the final battle on television.

The first half of the final locked in 1-1.

East Bengal FC took lead with Avinabo Bag scoring in the 11th minute by a left footer shot from the top-right corner of box. Avinabo’s shot fired the net touching the right post deceiving a Ctg Abahani defender Rezaul Karim header effort in the danger zone (1-0).

Nigerian forward Eleta Kingsley Oshiokha leveled the margin in the first half stopgap time by a tricky header from the top of the six yard box off a right footer cross from forward Mithun Chowdhury from left flank (1-1).

Eleta Kingsley doubled the margin for Ctg Abahani with his 2nd goal in the 53rd minute by a left footer athletic shot from danger zone utilising a free kick pass of Zahid Hossain from right side (2-1). Later, he was adjudged man of the final.

Eleta Kingsley also received the trophy of highest scorer hitting the net five times in the tournament.

Midfielder Hemanta Vincent Biswas extended the lead for Ctg Abahani in the 57th minute by a header from the top of the six yard box off a right footer cross from Eleta Kingsley from left flank (3-1).

Fisting the ball, Ctg Abahani goalie Rasel Mahmud saved his side from three crucial attacks of their opponent in the second half.

East Bengal FC produced some planned counter attacks in between 75th to 85th minute, but Ctg Abahani defended their castle successfully.

In the stopgap time, Ctg Abahani created a couple of quick counter attacks, but failed to convert those correctly.

Earlier in the 10th minute, Ctg Abahani spoiled an opportunity as forward Mithun Chowdhury’s header from the top of the six yard box went out edging left post off a right footer cross off forward Eleta Kingsley Oshiokha from right flank.

In the 26th minute, defender Atiqur Rahman Mishu brilliantly saved Abahani by a jumping header from goal line spoiling a diving header of East Bengal FC forward Abinash Ruidas from the top of the six yard box, off a corner pass from right side.

Bangladesh Football Federation president Kazi Salahuddin distributed the trophies as the chief guest.

East Bengal FC squad: Oladimji Bello Rasaq, Md Rafique, Ranti Martins Soleye, Deepak Kumar Mandal, Avinabo Bag, Dibyendu Sarkar, Antoni Saren, Abinash Ruidas (Samad Mallick), Prohlad Roy (Jagannath Sana), Biswajit Saha and Orok Essien Orok.
