Tigers take the hunt beyond ODIs as Mustafiz’s stardom goes global

Dhaka: Bangladesh cricket team started their international mission in the year 2016 playing a four-match T20I series against Zimbabwe that started in January 15 and ended in a 2-2 draw at Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in Khulna on January 22.
With their brilliant form in the back of 2015, spunky Bengal Tigers reached in the 13th Asia Cup final which was the first appearance for them in any T20 International tournament that involving three or more teams. Bangladesh finished runners-up losing to India by eight wickets at Sher-e-Bangla national Cricket stadium in March 6.
Bangladesh started their Asia Cup campaign with a 45-run loss to India in the opener, but resurgent with Mashrafe Bin Mortaza's leading for three successive victories on the way to final berth defeating United Arab Emirates (UAE) by 51 runs, upsetting previous edition champion Sri Lanka by 23 runs and finally denied Pakistan by 5 wickets.
In March, the Tigers moved for the ICC World Twenty20, India where they defeated associate nation Netherlands by eight runs, followed by a no result game against another associate nation Ireland. Then beat associate nation Oman by 54 runs in DL match.
Bangladesh eliminated from the race, losing to Pakistan by 55 runs, Australia by 3 wickets, India by one run and New Zealand by 75 runs.
To complete the T20I mission in the year of 2016, Bangladesh played 16 matches to secure seven victories while one match was ended in no result.
The Tigers' ODI journey finished with the only bilateral away series in this year involving three-match ODIs against New Zealand where they experienced a biter 3-0 defeat.
At home, Bangladesh first played ODI series against Afghanistan and secured 2-1 victory in October-November, followed by 1-2 loss in this format against England in November.
Mashrafe-led Bangladesh played nine ODIs in this period and secured three victories against six defeats.
Despite unfortunate, in 2016 Bangladesh played only a two-match Test series against cricket giant England and showed their brilliant form with historic maiden Test victory in the 2nd game by 108 runs that helped to draw the series 1-1 as they conceded a 22-run loss in the 1st game.
In their 10th Test occasion, Bangladesh achieved the maiden victory against England in in October.
According to the latest ICC rankings, Bangladesh placed the 9th in the Test, 7th in the ODI and 10th in the T20I format.
