Sharjah court freed man mistakenly jailed for 6 months
Earlier, the prosecution had charged Salimuddin with stabbing to death two people.
A man, who was wrongly arrested as his name was similar to that of a fugitive murder accused, served six months in jail before the Sharjah Criminal Court found out the truth and acquitted him.
The innocent Bangladeshi’s name - Salimudin Abu Al Qasim - matched with that of the prime accused, who fled the country after killing two and injuring three others, following a dispute over a shoe that escalated into a major brawl, reports the Albawaba.
Earlier, the prosecution had charged Salimuddin with stabbing to death two people.
While ordering release of the innocent man, the Sharjah court sentenced the second accused Suhail, who was charged with assault, to one year in prison. The third accused was handed six months in jail for his role in the clash, while the fourth accused was sentenced to five years in prison for not disclosing about the crime to the police and helping the prime accused flee the country.
He had even assaulted Suhail and threw a bicycle at him, causing him severe injuries.
The case dates back to January 31, 2014 when the Sharjah Police Comprehensive Police Station received information about a brawl, which had erupted among a number of Asian works at a labour accommodation in the Sharjah industrial area no. 1.
The police swung into action and rushed to the site only to find that two people had been killed, three were seriously injured and two others had sustained minor injuries. The first victim was stabbed in the chest and back. His body was found near the kitchen. The second victim’s body had multiple stab wounds. The police recovered the knife used by the accused to kill and injure others. The fingerprints and evidence from the spot were also collected.
The police launched a manhunt for the killer and caught the innocent Salimuddin. He was arrested from Karama area in Dubai and charged with premeditated murder. While denying his involvement in the crime, the Bangladeshi man told the prosecution and court that he didn’t know the defendants, who also confirmed that they didn’t know him.
The fourth convict said the prime suspect, who fled the country, was his half-brother, whose name was similar to that of the man who was wrongly arrested.
The prosecutor presented photographs of a valid passport, confirming that all the data was correct except for the photograph that did not belong to the innocent man.
During the court hearing, the second suspect - Suhail - said that the prime accused - one of the occupants of room no. 165 - stole his shoes, and beat him up. They got involved in fisticuffs, and others joined in the fight that led to the stabbing. He said that he did not know the Salimuddin who was arrested for the crime.
The court also found that the fugitive murderer was 25 years old, while the acquitted man was 35.
