Dhaka: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is likely to visit Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar on July 2 to see the situation on the ground and UN agencies engagement in the camps.

Guterres is scheduled to arrive here on July 1.

On April 6, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina invited the UN Secretary-General to visit Bangladesh to see for himself the plight of Rohingyas who have taken shelter here amid persecution in Myanmar, reports the UNB.

During the telephonic conversation, Sheikh Hasina also sought UN cooperation in implementing the agreement signed between Bangladesh and Myanmar over the Rohingya repartition.

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi is also likely to be here on June 28 or 29 to visit the Rohingya camps, an official told UNB.

World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim will also arrive here on a two-day visit on July 1, mainly to see the Rohingya situation in Cox’s Bazar.

They will also hold meetings with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Finance Minister AMA Muhith and Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, among others.

Sources at the Foreign Ministry here, however, said these visits are in discussions but they could not give any specific date yet.

The World Bank may provide Bangladesh with a grant worth around $200 million to help tackle the ongoing Rohingya crisis, according to the sources.

Some 700,000 Rohingya crossed the Bangladesh border from Myanmar’s Rakhine state since August 25 last year.

The President of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the UN Secretary General and the World Bank Group President will arrive in Bangladesh on June 30 and visit the Rohingya camps on July 1.

The visit comes barely a month after the United Nations Security Council’s visit to the Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar.
