People sheltering in the sea from deadly Greek wildfires

People huddled together in the sea to escape the wildfires in Greece, which have so far killed 91 people.
A shocking video showed victims seeking refuge in the ‘Silver Coast’ beach in Mati as smoke rose around them on July 23. The majority of people who have died have been killed in fires that engulfed their cars and homes, but some of them have drowned after fleeing to the sea, reports the Metro.
Volunteer divers have been trying to save people in the water and have also been attempting to retrieve bodies. But a search had to be abandoned yesterday after a storm made conditions too dangerous.
Officials in Greece raised the death toll from the wildfires that raged through a coastal area east of Athens to 91 and reported that 25 people were missing. It is Europe’s deadliest forest fire since 1900.
The wildfires originated in Mati, in Athens, last Monday, which is a popular seaside resort area. Angeliki Galiatsatou, who narrowly escaped the fire, attended a memorial service for the victims yesterday. She said: ‘I came to pray for the people who were lost and I pray that God blesses us all.’
Hellenic Fire Service spokeswoman Stavroula confirmed 59 victims were identified from remains but a further 28 sets of remains still needed to be id’d.
Greek authorities added they had evidence the wildfires were deliberately set by arsonists. They said the fires were made worst by winds of up to 100 kilometers per hour (62 mph).
