IS bride Shamima ‘regrets everything’ and has begged for second chance in UK
Shamima Begum, the woman who fled the UK to become an ISIS fighter’s bride says she ‘regrets everything’ and said she was ‘brainwashed’.
Speaking to The Times , she said she wanted to new start anew back in Britain, saying she had been brainwashed and actually knew very little about Islam.
Begum has reportedly lost three children during her time in Syria. Her third baby Jarrah Yago, lies in an unmarked grave beyond the refugee camp where he died, reports .cambridge-news.co.uk.
For the three weeks Jarrah was alive, he was the subject of much political and legal furore. However, he then died of a chest infection.
In the only interview Begum has given since his death, she said: ‘I have sat down and thought about how long I would have to stay here.
‘I have kind of accepted that I will have to stay here, I will have to make this like a second home. And it’s easier now as I do have women around me, friends who help me emotionally get through it.’
But the 19-year-old still hopes of a return to the UK, saying she had many regrets.
‘Since I left Baghuz I really regretted everything I did, and I feel like I want to go back to the UK for a second chance to start my life over again,’ she said.
‘I was brainwashed. I came here believing everything that I had been told, while knowing little about the truths of my religion.’
A stark difference to what Begum had said before he son’s birth, where she showed a lack of remorse and repeated ISIS phraseology.
Since her first interview, and the before the birth of her son, Begum was living at the al-Hawl camp, where radicals living amongst the refugees would threaten anyone who spoke out against ISIS.
Since then Begum has been moved to al-Roj, mainly for her safety. Perhaps, this safety means she can say how she really feels. Or perhaps she only wishes to win public affection in an effort to return to the UK.
There are now two appeals against home secretary Sajid Javid’s revocation of Begum’s British citizenship . However, for the time being she will remain in Syria indefinitely.
