Bangladesh visit to enhance ties, benefit two nations: Modi
Dhaka: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Bangladesh on Saturday morning on a two-day visit which is expected to see the signing of a number of instruments and deals.
Ahead of his visit, Modi said his visit will enhance ties between the two countries and will be beneficial to the people of both countries and in the larger good of South Asian neighbourhood.
‘I'm confident that my Bangladesh visit will enhance our ties & will be beneficial to people of both our Nations,’ he tweeted on Thursday night.
He mentioned in Bangladesh he will attend several programmes, which include meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has played an 'important role' in strong India-Bangladesh ties.
‘On 6th June I will begin my 2-day visit to Bangladesh. It is with a great sense of enthusiasm and delight that I visit a nation with which India's ties have been very strong,’ he also wrote on his official Facebook page describing his programmes in Dhaka.
Besides the historic Land Border Agreement (LBA) and a fresh line of credit of a reported $2 billion, Modi is likely to be signing a number of other economic agreements with Bangladesh during his maiden visit.
Though Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has made it clear that the Teesta water sharing agreement will not happen during Modi's Bangladesh visit, the Teesta issue is likely to be discussed between Modi-Hasina's one-to-one meeting, said a diplomatic source.
Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali will brief the media on Modi's visit on Friday morning.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrives here on Friday night to join Modi who will formally sign the LBA along with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina the next day.
Mamata, who will stay in a separate hotel, Radisson Hotel, will return home on Sunday.
During his much-hyped Bangladesh visit, Modi, according to Indian media, will send a strong message that India will go to great lengths to strengthen the hand of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh.
The Prime Minister will receive her Indian counterpart at the VVIP tarmac of Hazrat International Airport at about 10:15am.
After a ceremony at the airport, Modi will visit National Martyrs' Memorial, Savar, according to his tentative programme schedule.
He is likely to visit a garment industry at Savar before visiting Bangabandhu Memorial Museum.
‘I will pay tributes to martyrs of the 1971 liberation war at the National Martyrs' Memorial. I am eager to visit Bangabandhu National Museum and pay tributes to the great Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a friend of India and a pillar of strength and democracy in the South Asian region,’ he wrote on the Facebook.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will receive Modi at the Prime Minister's Office at 4:10pm and will have the tete-a-tete there.
Then delegation-level talks will be held there from 4:45pm. Both the Bangladesh and Indian Prime Ministers will witness a signing ceremony at the Prime Minister's Office. Modi will also sign visitors' book there.
In the evening, he will attend the Banquet and enjoy cultural programme at Sonargaon Hotel in the city.
Before that, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali will meet the Indian Prime Minister at Sonargaon Hotel at about 3:30pm where Modi will be staying.
On Sunday, Modi will visit Dhakeshwari National Temple about 8:40am, Ramakrishna Mission at 9:30am and unveil plaques for grant-in-aid projects at the new Chancery complex at Indian High Commission in Dhaka’s Baridhara at 10:10am.
He then will go to the Prime Minister's Office to flag off bus services at about 10:50am.
‘Further, to promote greater people-to-people ties and connectivity, I, along with PM Hasina and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, will flag off bus services on Kolkata-Dhaka-Agartala and Dhaka-Shillong-Guwahati routes,’ Modi wrote on the Facebook page.
The Indian Prime Minister will meet President Abdul Hamid at Bangabhaban at about 12:40pm and will attend a function at Darbar Hall.
Modi will also attend a private lunch hosted by the President at the Bangabhaban, and sign visitors' book there.
There will be a meeting between Indian Prime Minister and Bangladesh Opposition Leader Raushan Ershad at Sonargaon Hotel at about 3:10pm.
Modi will deliver a speech for public at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre at about 6:30pm.
‘It will be my privilege to receive the Award of Liberation War Honour on behalf of Atal ji. Atal ji, as Foreign Minister and as PM, placed great emphasis on strong ties with Bangladesh and had visited Bangladesh in 1999,’ Modi mentioned on his Facebook page.
There is no schedule with BNP chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia so far.
The Indian Prime Minister will leave Dhaka for New Delhi by a special flight at about 8:20pm.
Ahead of Modi's maiden visit to Bangladesh, the cabinet has already approved the drafts of three agreements and two protocols to be signed with India to boost trade, commerce and connectivity between the two countries.
