Int’l community shocked at loss of lives in landslides
The European Union (EU), Canada and the United Kingdom on Wednesday expressed deep shock at the loss of lives in landslides while the EU offered support to alleviate the impact of this severe natural disaster.
‘If requested, the European Union stands ready to provide support to alleviate the impact of this severe natural disaster,’ said EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Pierre Mayaudon, reports UNB.
He expressed his heart-felt sorrow and solidarity for the loss of lives and property caused by landslides in Chittagong, Rangamati and Bandarban in the early hours of June 13.
Ambassador Mayaudon, in a message, also expressed his sympathy to those who have died while conducting rescue operations.
‘As a longstanding partner of Chittagong Hill Tracts, the European Union sends a strong message of solidarity to all affected people,’ said the EU Ambassador.
British High Commissioner in Dhaka Alison Blake in separate message conveyed condolences to the families for precious lives lost in the landslides. ‘Our thoughts and prayers for all affected (people),’ she tweeted.
Canadian High Commissioner in Dhaka Benoît-Pierre Laramée said he is saddened to learn about the landslides in Chittagong districts, which killed and injured many people.
‘We grieve with the families and friends of those who have lost loved ones, and wish all those injured a speedy and full recovery. Our thoughts are for all affected,’ he said in a statement.
Danish Ambassador in Dhaka Mikael H Winther also tweeted saying ‘Our thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones after the awful disaster in Chittagong, Rangamati and Bandarban.’
