Boko Haram releases new video of alleged Chibok girls
Boko Haram on Sunday released a video of the girls allegedly kidnapped from Chibok in April 2014, showing some who are still alive and claiming others died in airstrikes.
‘They should know that their children are still in our hands,’ said a man whose face was covered by a turban in the video posted on YouTube.
Over two years after Boko Haram kidnapped 276 schoolgirls from the Government Girls’ Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, the group on Saturday night released a second video of the hostages.
No fewer than 218 girls are believed to still be in the group’s custody after 58 escaped from their abductors. The last escapee, Amina, slipped from the terrorist’s grip in April 2016 along with her baby and was received by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Nigerian-born blogger, Ahmad Salkida, who broke news of the release of the new video on Twitter, said it was issued by the faction headed by Abubakar Shekau.
Salkida, who used to be close to the group, is currently on exile in Dubai and said it was exclusively sent to him. He said it contained horrific images of some of the hostages allegedly killed by Nigerian military airstrikes in the North-East of the country.
He said some of the captured girls captured 853 days ago spoke in the new video.
He said the group restated its demands in the new video.
‘Many of the girls can be seen in the video. A Chibok girl speaks in mother tongue and narrates how airstrikes have killed dozens of her mates.
‘The demands of the captors remains the same, the only difference today is the sense of urgency to rescue these girls, they look… dear oh dear. What sort of a human being will subject fellow human beings to this level of unimaginable suffering?
‘This is the second time Shekau has ordered a video of the girls to be released to the public, since the abduction of the girls 852 days ago.
‘Horrifying images of some of the #Chibok girls alleged to have been killed by airstrikes. I will end this commentary until video is uploaded,’ said his tweets.
He also tagged the Bring Back Our Girls movement which has consistently demanded for serious action by government to ensure their release.
Shekau, who has previously been declared killed by the Nigerian military, resurfaced two weeks ago after the so-called Islamic State declared Abu Musab al-Barnawi as the new leader of the group.
The new leader had said in a video that he and his followers were ready to wrest control of the group from Shekau for killing Muslims.
