Shamsur Rahman’s 10th death anniv today
Today (Wednesday) marks the 10th death anniversary of eminent poet Shamsur Rahman.
Different socio-cultural organisations have chalked out elaborate programmes, including discussion, recitation from the Holy Quran and milad mahfil, marking the day, reports UNB.
Jatiya Kabita Parishad will place wreaths at the grave of the poet at Banani in the city while a milad mahfil will be held at his Shyamoli residence on the occasion.
Antarjatik Shahitto Sanskritik Shongjog, a cultural organisation, will organise a discussion programme at the seminar hall of the Central Public Library at 3:00pm.
State minister for Science and Technology Yafes Osman will be present as the chief guest at the programme while renowned novelist Selina Hossain, also president of the organisation, will preside over the ceremony.
Poets Kamal Chowdhury, Mohammad Sadiq, Asad Abdul Mannan, Begum Akhtar Kamal, Shakil and Sohrab Hossain will, among others, be present at the programme.
Shamsur Rahman was born on October 23 in 1929 at Mahut-Tuli in old part of the capital Dhaka.
He wrote more than sixty books of poetry and is considered a key figure in Bengali literature.
The major themes of his poetry and writings include liberalism,
humanism, human relations and romanticism.
The great poet died of heart and kidney ailments on August 17 in 2006 after having been in a coma for 12 days.
