British envoy visits Oxfam’s Bangladesh country office
British High Commissioner in Dhaka Robert Gibson CMG visited the country office of Oxfam in Dhaka on Wednesday.
The High Commissioner spent the day interacting with the Oxfam staff in order to gain an in-depth understanding on how the organisation mobilises the power of people against poverty, according to an Oxfam media release.
The visit is an attempt to exchange views on the work Oxfam has been doing in Bangladesh since 1970, where women’s rights have been at the heart of all they do.
The British envoy also witnessed how the rural women are using information technology to improve their quality of life and sharing their stories on social media like Facebook through Oxfam’s initiative under its Resilience building program called REE-CALL.
Addressing the staff gathering, Robert Gibson said: “I am delighted to have spent the day learning from the inside how an international charity works, and share experiences with Oxfam staff in Bangladesh.
‘Through hard work and commitment I have seen how a dedicated team is using innovation and technology to help lift millions out of extreme poverty and make Bangladesh a better place to live for all its citizens.”
The High Commissioner also had a courtesy call with Oxfam Great Britain’s Chief Executive Mark Goldring.
