Satkhira: Two alleged forest robbers were killed in a reported gunfight with police at Borkuport village in Shyamnagar upazila of Sathkhira on Monday night.

The deceased are Alal Gazi alias Alauddin, the ringleader of Alal Group, a resident of Shitalpur village in Asashuni upazila, and Saidul, a resident of Sora village in Shyamnagar upazila.

The Shyamnagar police said a team of the police led by Sub-inspector Nazmul Hasan lay in ambush in the area at about 11:00pm as a forest robber gang was preparing to commit robbery in Sundarbans.

Police chased off the robbers as they tried to flee after sensing the presence of the law enforcers.

The robbers opened fire on the policemen forcing them to fire back that triggered a gunfight.

Alal and Saidul were caught in the line of fire and seriously injured while other members of the gang managed to get away.  Alal and Saidul were rushed to Shyamnagar Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared them dead.

However, three policemen were injured in the incident.

Police also recovered five rounds of bullet and several sharp weapons from the scene.
