RU BCL leader held while mugging
Rajshahi: A leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Rajshahi University (RU) unit along with an outsider was held for allegedly snatching mobile phones and cash from two students on the campus on Wednesday.
The arrested were identified as Joni Ahmed, a master’s degree student of Information Science and Library Management subject and assistant secretary of the RU unit of BCL, and Rajon, son of Shafiqul Islam of Bulnagar area of the Rajshahi city.
Witnesses said a group of students were gossiping in front of the Senate Bhaban on the campus in the afternoon when Joni and Rajon appeared on the scene on a motorbike.
They told all except two students of the Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Department to leave the place.
Later, they snatched two mobile phones and Tk 2,700 in cash from the two students.
As the muggers were about to leave the place, a group of students went there from the nearby Shabash Bangladesh playground and caught them.
The students gave them a good beating and set fire to their motorbike.
On information, police rushed in and arrested the duo, said officer-in-charge of Motihar Police Station Humayun Kabir.
Acting general secretary of the RU BCL Khaled Hossain said they will inform the central committee about the incident and seek expulsion of the accused BCL leader.
