Indefinite bus strike begins in Nilphamari
Nilphamari: An indefinite bus strike enforced by the bus owners and workers on six routes of the district protesting the beating of a bus driver’s assistant began on Sunday.
Bus Malik-Shramik Okya Parishad (an association of transport owners and workers) announced the strike on Saturday night.
Plying of all buses on the six routes has remained suspended due to the strike.
No long distance bus or truck was seen plying the routes after the strike started at about 6:00am.
Some other small vehicles like microbus and battery-run utility vehicles and easy-bike were plying the roads as usual despite the strike.
Elias Hossain, president of the association, said a number of passengers beat up Nazmul Huda, driver’s assistant of a Mumu Paribahan bus on the Doma-Dimla Road while the bus was going to Dimla from Shariatpur at about 7:30pm on Sunday.
The association chief threatened to announce a tougher action programme if the local authorities do not take any steps to settle the dispute.
